The residency program offers artists the time and support to create new work and fosters an environment that encourages creativity, dialog, and experimentation

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery announces a call for entries with the theme “Landscapes” for a juried art contest for the month of February 2012.  The gallery urges all 2D artists to submit their best “landscape” art for inclusion into the gallery’s March 2012 online group exhibition.

The gallery invites all 2D artists regardless of where they reside and regardless of their experience or education in the art field to send us your best interpretation of the theme “Landscapes” by depicting the natural world, outdoor scenery, geographical environments’ and any related landscape subjects.

A group exhibition of the top ten finalists will be held online at the Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery during the month of March 2012. Awards will be for 1st through 5th places and in addition 5 artists will be recognized with Honorable Mention awards. Depending on the amount and the quality of the entries, these winning categories may be expanded with Special Recognition awards as well. The submission process and  the deadline ends on February 27, 2012.

Winners of the “Landscapes” Art Exhibition will receive extensive worldwide publicity in the form of email marketing, 70+ press release announcements posts, 65+ event announcements posts, social media marketing and increased website traffic in order to make the art world aware of the artist’s accomplishments. Q. Tell us about your work.

A. Contemporary society tends to confuse the lines that separate race and culture. My artwork explores these territories by examining speech, behaviors, and beliefs of various groups and examining where overlap occurs and prejudices are formed. Fabric-based collages and elements of photography are used to convey these ideas, integrating material and concept with the intent of pushing the viewer to re-evaluate their morals and ideas. Each viewer approaches the piece with their own preconceived principles, and within the experience with the piece there may be a point where these personal and societal morals are examined. The text I choose is sampled, often from conversations I have had or stories I’ve been told. Such pieces include You Are The Blackest, and She’s White to Me. I intend the text to pose questions and provoke thought beyond what is generated through media, popular culture, geography, and the environment. I am interested in the history, events, and personal accounts of inter-racial couples, mixed individuals, race identity and ownership, degrees of color, and sexuality within race. I work to further identify, define and explore the concept and significance of whiteness. I am interested in individuals who are perceived as and identify with a culture that is not claimed as their own. I am intrigued by the connection contemporary views have with historical ones, and how much residue and resonance these perceptions still hold today and I work to prompt a larger personal and societal conversation.

Laura Pawson was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She received her Bachelor
of Fine Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has participated in
residencies and exhibitions in the United States, South America and Europe. She
currently teaches Art and Special Education in Brooklyn, New York.

EXHIBIT PROPOSALS
Solo, Two-person, Group and Concept Submissions

SEASON 9 – 2012/2013

On average one-third of Manifest’s exhibits are dedicated to solo exhibits. Solo exhibitors have included local, regional, and national artists from as far away as New York City and San Francisco. It is important that each of our seasons of free public exhibits consist of a balanced mix of solo and group thematic projects. The group shows provide diversity of approach, media, style, and geographic origin, while the solo exhibits provide a deeper insight into one artist’s vision.

Well over 100 artists exhibit, and more than 3000 patrons visit the gallery each year. Thousands of artists submit works to thematic projects produced at the gallery. And our exhibits are routinely reviewed in regional, and sometimes national, news and art publications.

Manifest is eager to receive proposals of various types, including any genre or media, and accepts these on an ongoing basis, reviewing them starting in early June in consideration for the upcoming season. The organization and gallery is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit with a mission to stand for quality in the visual arts. We set our own bar high, and generally exceed the expectations of both the exhibiting artists and our patrons with our programming.

All exhibit spaces are appropriately track-lit. The Main Gallery (the largest of the three) has street-facing windows nearly floor to ceiling providing excellent public exposure for the artwork 24/7. Exhibits are open to the public five hours a day, five days a week for a total of four weeks on view.

Gallery assignments are decided by the curatorial staff when planning the season. Proposals may suggest a gallery, or indicate the need for a specific type of space. For example, our Parallel Space gallery can be made completely dark even during daytime. But exhibit size and location will be determined by the curatorial staff at the time of season planning.

All Women Art Competition

Q. Tell us about your work (as it relates to the images you submitted).

A. I really enjoy portraits and I’m always running around with my camera documenting life around me (so much that my friends probably hate me by now).  My shots are extremely intimate and simple because that’s how I like to see the world. I enjoy having personal connections with the people I photograph because it makes the moments captured more real.

Q. Even though you are still an up and comer do you have any advice for your peers?

A. As an artist the only advice I can ever give to anyone is this; Be yourself. Be true to yourself and all the things you love because in the end that is all that matters.

Q. Where can we learn more about you and your work?

A. I can be found photographing around William Paterson University, occasionally displaying work around the tri-state area in various galleries. Currently, I have no shows on display but stay tuned!

More About Nikki:

Like most artists, a broken heart is my muse most of the time. I have issues with my own personal space and invading the intimacy of someone else’s personal space for a photo is not unlike me at all. My photos are simple and show sides of people that others don’t normally get to see. I paint on occasion too, wood-scraps and Krylon being my normal mediums in styles that mimic Johns and Pollock.  I like for my art to be real and unstaged because it shows the true nature of who I am. I’m a little bit wild and extremely abrasive but much more traditional than you would think.

Overview

Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center was founded in a West Side icehouse in 1974 by a group of young artists (including Charles Clough, Nancy Dwyer, Robert Longo and Cindy Sherman) as a place where artists could develop new work and where the work of contemporary artists working in all media could be exhibited.

Over the past three decades, Hallwalls has evolved into the region’s largest multi-disciplinary arts center, one of the most active and programmatically diverse members of the national network of artists’ organizations. Hallwalls visual arts, video, film, performance, music, and literature programs have presented the work of over 7,000 artists from around the world. In 1996, Hallwalls published Consider the Alternatives, a 280 page book exploring Hallwalls’ history through the eyes of artists, staff, and audience members.

From the beginning, Hallwalls has presented the work of emerging and under-represented artists in Western New York and throughout the United States and Canada, with an emphasis on supporting experimentation and new projects. Hallwalls is equally committed to presenting the work of nationally recognized artists who have not had the opportunity to present their work to Buffalo-area audiences. While the scope of Hallwalls programming is international, many of its services are tailored to meet the particular needs of artists in Western New York.

Hallwalls is a member of the National Association of Artists Organizations (NAAO) and the National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture (NAMAC).

Visual Arts

Hallwalls provides on-site insurance, and all artists who are invited to present their work are paid a professional fee for their services. Transportation of artwork is arranged by mutual agreement between the artist and Hallwalls Visual Arts Curator.

Hallwalls reviews proposals on an ongoing basis. All proposals are reviewed for possible inclusion in solo exhibitions, group exhibitions, and residencies. Proposals that are not returned within three months may be kept on file for up to a year for further review. Hallwalls artists’ files are open to all local and visiting curators. Hallwalls maintains a separate file of regional artists, the Western New York Slide File.

A STANDARD PROPOSAL PACKAGE SHOULD INCLUDE:

GALERIE NUEDGE, a professional commercial contemporary art gallery dedicated to the dissemination of contemporary art (painting, sculpture, photography multimedia) is inviting artists to submit their portfolio.

THE FACILITIES
621 Gallery space for changing exhibitions consists of a large room 77 ft x 30ft with a 12x12ft free standing wall dividing the space into two rooms. The building is part of a World War II era lumber mill warehouse. There is open ceiling, exposing old wooden beams, a metal roof and skylights. Track lighting is attached to suspended steel frames in the front and back gallery. The floors are painted gray cement. The white walls are finished sheet rock up to 12′ height. The back wall of the gallery has plywood under the sheet rock. The walls are pale gray with the center wall a shade darker. The space is 2300 square feet in area. The adjoining Nan Boynton Memorial Gallery provides a smaller exhibition space. This space is newly renovated and can be utilized for one-person shows or smaller group exhibitions.

Last week, I stood on post at the start of a typical day in the American Wing period rooms. This guy and two teenage boys who I took to be his sons or grandsons ambled in. Guy asked me a question in what I found to be a (not atypically) rude fashion. I gave him an answer, albeit a curt one. Throughout my rotation, he and the boys returned a few times, always with questions. He told me that of all the other guards they had approached, I was “the only one who seems to actually look at what I’m guarding.” To this I remained silent, given the utter impossibility of me ever agreeing with him and siding against my colleagues. At one point, the guy even commanded me to smile, which is a pet peeve of mine (I’ll smile when I FEEL LIKE IT, thank you very much) so I gave him this salty, rancid smirk that somehow he accepted in lieu of the real thing. All this continued through the morning. After my first break, I began my next rotation and lo: there he was. At this point, he seemed determined to win me over. And you know, by some strange magic he managed to lure me in, so that after a few volleys of his potentially derogatory (or innocently abrasive) observations and my dubious, terse responses, my wall toppled. We actually ended up conversing for a bit and he became quite charming. Now THIS (finally) is the strange thing: guy turns out to be an astrophyisicist in the research department of the American Museum of Natural History. At the end of our exchange, he took out his wallet and proceeeded to say something about being nice to me, since I was so nice to him. Thinking that he was about to offer me a tip of some sort, I immediately balked (and side-stepped out of view of the camera). But no; he took out a business card and told me that if I ever want to go see a special exhibit at the Natural History for FREE, to shoot him an email or give him a call. How ’bout that?

Sometimes I think art is in the coincidences.

I also find scientific exhibits inspirational. Something about their impersonality and firm factual basis makes me feel more keenly my own capacity to create, to expand on the laws of nature in a personal way. I think I may actually take up this guy on his offer at some point.
